Just a little extra education
By Dr Tristram Finn
On Tuesday evening my wife and I went to a Veterinary CPD event. This particular event was hosted by Peninsula Vet Care and the Emergency Referral Hospital Team. I’m always particularly interested in attending events run by Peninsula Vet Care as I used to work for the company and really enjoyed working there.
Why did I leave the clinic?
We had bought a home a little too far from the clinic to be sustainable, and with a new baby on the way, I found myself looking for a clinic closer to home, which I happily found in Pakenham.
This particular event was about medical and surgical management of Gall Bladder Mucoceles. My understanding prior to the event was that the diagnosis of a mucocele would need referral to a specialist clinic for surgical removal. The event confirmed this to be ultimately true. Diagnosis of a well dog with a mucocele should be managed medically while awaiting surgery VS diagnosis of a sick dog with a mucocele should be very quickly referred to surgery. Obviously, the event had far more interesting information and intricacies than what I have skimmed above.
While I really enjoyed deepening my understanding on the topic, what I especially enjoyed was connecting with my peers and ex-colleagues. It’s amazing the people that your run into at these events! For example,
On arrival, my wife Livia immediately bumped into a nurse she had previously worked with at an old clinic. They were hugging before I could wonder who was behind the embrace.
My cousin! Hoping to be accepted into Veterinary School next year she is working as a nurse at a clinic on the Peninsula.
Friends who I had studied with at University who I had not seen for years.
Dr Arthur House himself!
Many friends who I worked with at Rosebud Veterinary Clinic.
Just to name a few, there was so many people to talk to! No one else at my own clinic was able to attend. I personally enjoy expanding my knowledge and meeting up with all these people who have enriched my life in a previous time that I have not been able to see for a while due to how busy we all become.
Next time you see a CPD event pop up in your clinic email, dedicate some time from your schedule. You just never know what you might learn and who you may bump in to.
It could even be me!
