How do you know when it’s time for a break?

drtristramfinn

I am fortunate enough to be someone who loves my job. It’s not a chore getting up each morning because I genuinely love what I do each day and I work with some pretty awesome people. I was discussing this with a friend this week. He is a teacher and used to be just like me, loved his job and loved going to work every day. But the effects of teaching in covid has worn him down and he’s now wondering if he still enjoys his work.

I find that if its been a long time since annual leave or long weekend of the family, I start to find it a little harder to get up for a work out before work and get a little more frustrated at work too. The little things get to me more than they ever would. Something that I used to just brush off, really wears me down! Having annual leave booked serves two purposes. One, it gives us something to look forward to. I have mentioned this in a few of my Instagram posts recently. Many people recommend having three things to look forward to; something now, soon and later. Something to look forward to which is happening now such as a dinner out with a friend or family. Something a little bigger in the next few months (ie: happening soon), like a long weekend away, and lastly a something later in the further future which might be something like a longer stint of annual leave. For us, we have just done that with a trip to Noosa!

The second purpose of annual leave is a little more obvious. It’s gives us time to wind down and refresh from what can be a very busy and exhausting profession at times. We have just had the most refreshing break in Noosa. The average day consisted of nothing overly exhilarating, which was what was so special about it. A typical day started with breakfast in bed with my wife and son, followed by a trip to the beach, a coffee and treat down Hastings street, and then another hour in the water at the pool. Followed by a lazy afternoon with my wife while my son napped. The complete opposite of our normal life which gets so busy at times.

Take this as your reminder to make sure you have some you time scheduled and some small and big joys to look forward to. These are the things which keep us going strong and happy at work and in life.
