Anyone can be an inspiration

Recently my wife has talked a lot about an Instagram personality called Nicky Newman (@nicknacklou), someone she has never met but has drawn a connection through her content and message. My wife accidently stumbled upon her in a random scroll though Instagram one night. Nicky was diagnosed with terminal metastatic breast cancer five and a half years ago and since then has campaigned to raise awareness for the disease and encourage people to celebrate life. Last week, Nicky lost her fight with cancer and died.

Her message was to “Go Grab Life.” To seize every life opportunity like we won’t get another. Live life to the fullest and never take for granted the people we have around us, and to love them a little harder. She had a quarter of a million people following her and believing her message, which I’m sure she never imagined possible when she started her Instagram account so long ago.

It goes to show that we never really know how many people we are able to touch with our presence in this life. For example, that new graduate you mentored for six months many years ago, may fondly remember and be grateful for your help. I know I remember all those who taught me to get me where I am. I will always remember their stories, lessons and jokes that kept me laughing, and the skills that I still practice today. You just never know if a small act you do each day, like thanking a nurse for help, might have a huge impact on that person.

So often on my own Instagram account I try to encourage this message. To live the brightest life you can, to see the positive as opposed to the negative and to really try to grab those life opportunities when they come by. Whether it’s a learning opportunity at work or a great coffee on a sunny weekend with your family.

This is your reminder to GO GRAB LIFE! Whether it be at work or at home. Love those nearest you fiercely and not to take any day for granted!
